Lizeth Gómez is an immigration and criminal defense Attorney at the Urbina Law Firm, LLC. She was born in Bogotá, Colombia and immigrated to the United States as a child. She grew up in Atlanta, Georgia as an undocumented immigrant. She has a unique insight into the issues immigrant communities face every day and a passion for helping people establish their lives in the United States.
Mrs. Gómez has extensive experience in the legal field, particularly in criminal defense and immigration law. She earned a B.A. in Political Science from Georgia State University (GSU) and went on to earn her J.D. from the GSU College of Law. Throughout law school, Ms. Gómez was awarded internships with the offices of Judge Thompson in the State Court of Fayette County, the DeKalb County Public Defender, and the Spalding County District Attorney. Immediately following law school, she was awarded a fellowship with the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SPLC – SIFI). Later, she worked as an attorney with the Office of the Clayton County Public Defender. She has represented hundreds of indigent clients in criminal hearings as a public defender. She has also represented people detained in immigration detention centers as a pro bono attorney for the SPLC.
Ms. Gómez is committed to social justice, increasing the number of people of color in the legal field, and serving the immigrant community of Atlanta. She currently serves as a Professor at Freedom University, an underground freedom school for undocumented students, where she teaches Legal Studies. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Atlanta Pro Se Asylum Workshops. She serves as the South Regional Manager on the inaugural board of Hermanas In the Law. She is also an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Georgia Hispanic Bar Association, the American Constitution Society, and the National Lawyers Guild.
She lives in the metro-Atlanta area with her husband and a beautiful Border Collie. She enjoys exploring Atlanta’s trails and is a regular on the Beltline. She is a proud member of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.
